Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 Wii - ONM review

To put it simply, PES 2009 has regained Konami the football crown after FIFA '09 All-Play nicked it from under their noses last year. Every niggle and omission from last year's game has been accounted for and dealt with and we really can't think of anything more (other than more licensed teams) that could have been improved on. Online multiplayer is still present, the Edit mode is full and complete this time, players can download the latest transfer information to keep the game up-to-date and there's a nifty co-op mode where one player uses the Remote while the other uses a Classic Controller. It's rare that we say this, but even if you have last year's version of the game this is worth getting anyway. Well done Konami.

While PES 2009 is still being refined, the game is clearly on course to deliver on many of the developer's promises, with a more realistic rendition of the beautiful game seemingly in store. And with the addition of a second control system for co-op play, which allows one player to drag players into space with the Wiimote while a second controls individuals players, the scope for multiplayer entertainment also has the potential to exceed its predecessor.

In short, the entire process of only being in direct control of an individual player has pretty much gone out of the window, replaced by a system more akin to being an arrow-wielding Andy Gray on Sky Sports. Effectively you're an all-seeing tactician in control of a live match. You have the ability to direct the flow of play, often using several players at once.

Ever since the curtain was pulled back on Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 for Wii, we knew it was going to be something special. The integration of IR into a sports game has been extremely minimal so far, but is absolutely ideal in this situation, allowing players to not only play the ball specifically, but direct traffic and precisely move every player on the field in tandem, making for the most realistic, strategic, and intuitive soccer experiences we’ve ever seen. It’ll take a bit of time to learn the basics, but Pro Evo is extremely rewarding, is hands-down one of the top sports titles on Wii.
