House of the Dead Overkill - reviews
It mightn't be perfect, especially in terms of challenge and basic longevity, but Overkill is a welcome rollick in the sort of shameless depravity most other consoles would blush at. Its stylish facade and rock solid core shooter mechanics packs enough visceral thrills and prude-baiting excess to keep you playing long after more respectable titles have lost their lustre. If you're looking for sophistication and depth, you won't find it here. Want to shoot things in the face and feel a bit dirty afterward though? The House of the Dead has opened its doors.
The first game in SEGA's early 2009 Wii onslaught is a resounding success. There's no doubt whatsoever that Headstrong lavished a lot of love on The House of the Dead: Overkill and that they hold a lot of affection for the series as a whole - it's completely different from the other games in many ways, but is still just as fun to play, and the new setting fits hand in glove with the series, though it is a step up in maturity levels over the other games for sure. If you want more 'proper' games on Wii this is exactly the thing you need to be supporting. Buy it.
Nintendo's Wii just received a Mature-rated jump-start, thanks to Sega's gore-filled The House of the Dead: Overkill. This enjoyable light gun shooter takes you through seven levels filled with zombies and other terrors. Armed with a pistol, shotgun and other deadly toys, you'll use the Wii remote to dismember these creatures and splatter their guts along walls.
Take a regular on-rails light gun game, such as the past House of the Dead titles, and add a love for profanity, sick jokes, violence, and Grindhouse cinema. Each level is introduced and ended by gravelly-voiced announcers explaining the non-sensical story—"Varla Guns is the older sister of a crippled man, SLAIN BY YOUR HAND! Now she's out for revenge... in cutoff shorts!"—and the main characters deal with each other in terms of profanity-laden terms of endearment. Such as "diaper-s*&$."
