Animal Crossing City Folk reviews
This is the best execution of Animal Crossing so far, but it is difficult to view it as anything other than a lazy remake of what's gone before. With Wild World the adherence to template was forgivable: the original's framework was robust and interesting enough to warrant a rebuild. But for this Wii game there was no need for more polish, especially not in lieu of new ideas, fresh takes on core concepts and happy invention. In broadening Animal Crossing's borders, Nintendo has done nothing to add to its depth, and as such this is arguably still the best cutesy Japanese life-sim on the market and a solid buy for newcomers, but for series fans it's in no way a life worth reliving.
Animal Crossing: City Folk, despite lacking large strides in the innovation department, still manages to be an impressive well of fun gaming activity. Fans of the series will see this game as exactly what they want: more of the same. For those of you that've dipped your toes in the Animal Crossing waters and found it not to be to your liking, the multiplayer aspects might be compelling enough to bring you back to the pool. But, until we can get some time with that, we're not sure if there's anything else in this package that will convince you to check out City Folk. Basically, it's just more Animal Crossing. Whether that's good or bad for you is something you'll have to decide on yourself.
It's still a great game but fans of the DS version are going to feel short-changed by the lack of imagination in this Wii retread. For everyone who missed out last time, or if you're keen to start such an epic afresh on the TV, this may well be the family game that sends Wii Sports into permanent retirement.
Ultimately, it comes down to this: Do you really wanna spend the time doing all of the things you already spent so much time on in Wild World? And do you want to do them in almost the exact same ways? City Folk just seems like a huge missed opportunity?either that, or a lazy cash-in on Nintendo's newfound casual audience. If it's the former, they ought to just call it Wii Mortgage Payments.
