Dragon Quest Swords latches onto the Wii’s motion-based gameplay, but it also retains many of its RPG elements, which results in an interesting hybrid that role-playing fanatics and action junkies alike can enjoy. Hordes of slimes can be dispatched by a wild waggle of the remote, but most enemies, as in most RPGs, require specific tactics to take down. The combat functionality is very enjoyable, and the variety in the encounters keeps it fresh. The characters are certainly interesting, and the conflict surrounding the Queen raises some intrigue, but the story mostly falls flat. Regardless though, the well-crafted combat deserves a look.
